Ancestral Craft.
Conscious Impact.
MAWACO is more than an online store. It is a living bridge between ancestral wisdom and modern, conscious lifestyles.
Hands That Carry History
At MAWACO, every bag, backpack, and accessory begins long before it reaches your hands. It begins in ancestral territories, with communities who weave memory, identity, and resilience into every fiber. Our artisans are not suppliers; they are cultural guardians, storytellers, and co-creators of a living heritage.
This page is a tribute to two Colombian ethnic groups whose craftsmanship shapes the soul of MAWACO: the Wayúu people of La Guajira and the artisans of the Sinú region in Córdoba.
By choosing MAWACO, you become part of a holistic and inclusive cycle where fashion honors people, culture, and planet.
The Wayúu People – Weaving the Spirit of the Desert
An Ancestral Culture Alive in Every Thread
The Wayúu are an Indigenous people who inhabit the arid landscapes of La Guajira, in northern Colombia. Their culture is deeply connected to nature, dreams, and oral tradition. For centuries, Wayúu women have been master weavers, passing down their knowledge from mothers to daughters as a sacred act of cultural continuity.
According to Wayúu tradition, weaving was taught by Wale’kerü, the mythical spider who symbolizes wisdom and creativity. Each mochila, bag, or textile is more than an object; it is a visual language.
The geometric patterns, known as kanas, represent elements of the natural world, family stories, spiritual beliefs, and the balance between the visible and invisible realms.
Craftsmanship as Identity and Resistance
Wayúu bags are entirely handmade, often taking weeks to complete. Every piece reflects patience, skill, and intention.
In a context marked by geographic isolation and social marginalization, craftsmanship is also a form of resistance and economic autonomy.
By working directly with Wayúu artisans, MAWACO helps preserve their cultural heritage while supporting fair income, dignified working conditions, and the continuity of ancestral knowledge in a modern world.

Sinú Artisans – Caña Flecha and the Art of Transformation
From Pre-Columbian Roots to Contemporary Design
In the fertile lands of the Sinú Valley, in the department of Córdoba, artisans have worked caña flecha for generations.
This natural fiber, native to the region, has been used since pre-Columbian times to create utilitarian and ceremonial objects deeply rooted in Indigenous Zenú culture.
The process of transforming caña flecha is meticulous and sustainable. The plant is harvested, dried, split, dyed with natural pigments, and handwoven using techniques refined over centuries. Traditionally associated with cultural symbols like the sombrero vueltiao, caña flecha today finds new expressions through modern design.
Where Past and Present Meet
MAWACO collaborates with Sinú artisans who reinterpret ancestral techniques into contemporary bags and accessories.
Clean lines, modern silhouettes, and functional forms blend seamlessly with pre-Columbian motifs, creating pieces that bridge history and current fashion.
This fusion represents a dialogue between generations, proving that tradition is not static but alive, adaptable, and relevant.
